A Truly Modern China Cymbal
Named for its exceptional crashing ability, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that the 21” AA Bash Ride is also a precise − almost delicate − ride cymbal. It delivers great stick articulation that floats above a simmering wash that will sit there all night, if you want it to. But crash it harder and the cymbal rears up in a great wave of sound. Based on SABIAN’s best-selling Raw Bell Dry Ride platform, the small bell design helps control the ride volume, while the cymbal’s light weight delivers the wall of wash. Known for designing some great wash rides over the years, SABIAN has truly stepped up with the AA Bash Ride. Cymbal Vote Winner
When SABIAN launched Cymbal Vote in 2012, it was the first time a major music manufacturer had allowed its customers to choose their annual product offering. The Cymbal Vote concept is simple: a dozen tantalizing new cymbal models are developed by the SABIAN Vault team so that drummers around the world can vote throughout an 8 week period until a final four are left standing. Those four are officially announced as SABIAN’s product offering at the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, California. SABIAN AA – Vintage Bright
AA was the first cymbal series produced by SABIAN when the company was founded in 1982. Using an automated hammering process to create stronger, tougher and louder cymbals, the combination of high-profile shape and small-peen concentric hammering raises the pitch for bright, explosive tone. And the use of traditional lathing increased durability and toughness for more intense, high-volume performances. As a result, AA cymbals are an ideal choice for classic rock and metal. Who Plays AA?
Chad Smith (RHCP), Blake Richardson (Between the Buried and Me), Gene Hoglan (Deathlok, Fear Factory), Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy),. Mike Wengren (Disturbed), Ray Luzier (Korn), Jimmy Degrasso (Alice Cooper) and Karl Perazzo (Santana), to name only a few. RHCP Chad Smith approaches AA from an interesting angle. Mike Wengren comments: “I’m a big fan of AA. With loud guitar players you’ve got to overpower them with whatever you can. I’m into 18”, 19”, 20” Crashes; they’re really bright and they’re really loud…they can really kill that guitar player. The vintage sound of AA powers through…guitarists can’t compete.” Chad Smith nods in agreement. “Yeah, right, the big cymbals! Because we play in bands that are loud, we need big cymbals to cut through.” Hand-Crafted – Every Step of the Way
Like all SABIAN B20 Cast Cymbals, AA series cymbals like the 21” AA Bash Ride begin their life in the SABIAN Foundry. There in the melting room, SABIAN metallurgists combine carefully measured amounts of Copper, Tin and Silver. The metal is heated at 2100 degrees Fahrenheit, then poured into casts. This centuries-old family process results in the most musical and durable metal of all cymbal alloys. Once cooled and hardened, the metal castings are moved into the oven room to be separated by weight. At this stage, it’s hard to believe these castings will eventually become a powerhouse model like the 21” AA Bash Ride cymbal. But first, they must go on a journey through Multi-rolling for intensity, Hammering for tone, Lathing for enhanced response and projection, and a final Aging process in the legendary SABIAN Vault for optimum sound. In a sense, it’s a journey that’s only complete when you play the cymbal of your choice − an evolution from idea to reality.
